Oradour

Belair

Named after Oradour-sur-Glane.

On 10 June 1944, four days after D-Day, a Waffen-SS company killed 642 people in this French village in the Haute-Vienne, among them 205 children; the women and children were locked in the church, which was set on fire. The village was never rebuilt: a new one was built nearby, and on Charles de Gaulle's orders the ruins were kept as a memorial.
