Named after the French fortress town of Montmédy.
Montmédy, in today's French Meuse department, takes its name from the castle of Mady, built by the counts of Chiny around 1220. Their county was sold in 1364 to Wenceslas I, the first Duke of Luxembourg. Montmédy belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg until 1659, when it passed to France with the Treaty of the Pyrenees.
