Named after the German town of Bitburg.
Bitburg, 'Béibreg' in Luxembourgish, lies in the Eifel about 50 km north-east of Luxembourg City. Count Henry V of Luxembourg granted it a town charter in 1262, and it belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg for centuries until the Congress of Vienna gave it to Prussia in 1815. After the Second World War a Luxembourg battalion was stationed there as an occupying force.
