Named after Alphonse Munchen (1850–1917), mayor of Luxembourg City.
Born in Diekirch, Munchen studied engineering in Liège. From 1878 to 1886 he was deputy director of the Hollerich blast-furnace company, and later sat on the board of the city gasworks in Hollerich. A city councillor from 1892, he was mayor from 1904 to 1915 and, in 1904, first president of the Liberal League. Streets in Luxembourg City and Bertrange bear his name.
