Jean-Baptiste Merkels (1860–1948), writer and consul.
Born in Hollerich, he emigrated to Chicago in 1892, worked for the World's Fair company and then, from 1894 to 1927, for the post office. He is known above all for linking Luxembourgers in America with home, publishing news, poems and newspaper articles from Luxembourg in Chicago. He was consul in Chicago until his death; in 1921 he published 'Blummen aus Amerika', a small selection of patriotic poems.
