Charlemagne (around 747–814).
King of the Franks from 768 and crowned emperor in Rome in 800, he united most of Western and Central Europe. He died in 814 in Aachen, his capital, and many historians call him the 'Father of Europe'. He was also an ancestor of several European ruling houses, among them the House of Luxembourg.
