'Val Sainte-Croix' means valley of the Holy Cross.
In Luxembourgish it is the 'Kräizgrënnchen'. A chapel of the Holy Cross with a hermitage stood in the valley until it was torn down in 1792–94; a cross made in 1833 in its memory has stood at the junction since 1984. The old Roman road from Reims to Trier ran through here, and Emperor Charles V entered the city this way in 1541.
