Théiwesbuer

Pfaffenthal

The Théiwesbuer, an old washing spring.

This old well beside the Pfaffenthal church once gave drinking water and water for washing in the wash house across the street. Legend says St Martin named it after 'Théiwes', an old form of the name of Matthew the Evangelist, patron of today's church. When the city demolished the houses of the old lane, Fritz Weimerskirch's protest song 'Lidd vum Théiwesbur' made the well known beyond Luxembourg City.
