Lavoisier

Verlorenkost

Named after Antoine Lavoisier (1743–1794), French chemist.

He showed the role oxygen plays in combustion, named oxygen in 1778 and recognised hydrogen as an element in 1783. He also helped construct the metric system. During the French Revolution he was charged with tax fraud and guillotined in Paris on 8 May 1794; a year and a half later the French government exonerated him.
