103 St–Corona Plaza

Corona, Queens

Named after 103rd Street and Corona Plaza; ‘corona’ is Italian and Spanish for ‘crown’.

The area was originally known as West Flushing. One theory says developer Benjamin W. Hitchcock renamed it in 1872; another credits Thomas Waite Howard, who petitioned in 1870 to call the post office Corona, the ‘crown of Queens County’. Corona Plaza, at Roosevelt Avenue and National Street, is a former lot turned into a pedestrian plaza. The station opened in 1917 as Alburtis Avenue.
