Named after 155th Street, the northernmost street of the 1811 grid.
155th Street is the northernmost of the 155 crosstown streets mapped in the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, and one of its 100-foot-wide streets. It is considered the boundary between Harlem and Washington Heights. At St. Nicholas Place the ground drops steeply at Coogan’s Bluff, and the street continues on the 155th Street Viaduct, a city landmark built in 1893, to the Macombs Dam Bridge.
