Amsterdam Avenue recalls New Amsterdam, the Dutch-era name of the city.
North of 59th Street, Tenth Avenue was renamed Amsterdam Avenue in 1890, at the request of local merchants seeking to distance themselves from ‘Death Avenue’ and raise property values. The Board of Aldermen first considered ‘Holland Avenue’. The name was meant to recall Manhattan’s 17th-century Dutch colonisation, when the city was known as New Amsterdam.
