Named after East 161st Street and Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees.
The team began as the New York Highlanders; sports editor Jim Price coined the nickname ‘Yankees’ as early as 1904 because it was easier to fit in headlines, and in 1913 it became the official name. Today’s stadium opened in 2009, replacing the original of 1923–2008. Part of East 161st Street was once Cedar Street, after an 1840 property called The Cedars.
