Named after 168th Street and Washington Heights, which recalls Fort Washington.
Washington Heights is named for Fort Washington, built by Continental Army troops at the highest natural point on Manhattan to defend the area against the British in the Revolutionary War. At the Battle of Fort Washington the Continental Army suffered one of its worst defeats, with more than 2,800 troops captured, and the British renamed the position Fort Knyphausen.
