Named after East 170th Street, ‘East’ because of the Manhattan-style numbering.
The West Bronx uses Manhattan’s street numbering, and its streets are labelled ‘East’ or ‘West’ from a dividing line: Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, roughly the centreline of the district first annexed to the city. Here East 170th Street runs through a tunnel under the Grand Concourse.
