Named after 191st Street, in the Fort George part of Washington Heights.
Fort George, the part of Washington Heights east of Broadway between 181st and Dyckman Streets, is named for a Revolutionary War fort; George Washington High School stands on the site of the original Fort George. The pedestrian tunnel from the station to Broadway has a name too: at its opening, officials agreed to call it Tunnel Street, still its official name.
