Named after East 219th Street, briefly the end of the line in 1917.
On 3 March 1917 the White Plains Road Line was extended to East 219th Street–White Plains Road, bringing rapid transit to Williamsbridge and Wakefield; the next stations north opened at the end of that month. Like most Bronx cross streets, it carries ‘East’ because it lies east of Jerome Avenue, the borough's dividing line, as Fifth Avenue is in Manhattan.
