Named after East 225th Street in Wakefield, named for George Washington's birthplace.
In the flatter East Bronx, only the Wakefield neighbourhood picks up the borough's street numbering. Wakefield was named after the Virginia plantation where George Washington was born. It became a village on 8 August 1889, taking in a village called Washingtonville.
