Named after West 231st Street, in Kingsbridge, named after the King’s Bridge.
Kingsbridge takes its name from the King’s Bridge, likely built by enslaved Africans in 1693 and owned by Frederick Philipse, lord of Philipsburg Manor. It spanned a now-filled-in part of Spuyten Duyvil Creek, roughly parallel to today’s 230th Street. Earlier, in 1669, Johannes Verveelen had moved his ferry to the spot that later became Broadway and West 231st Street.
