33 St

Murray Hill, Kips Bay, Manhattan

33rd Street runs near the southern edge of the old Murray farm on Murray Hill.

Murray Hill takes its name from Robert Murray (1721–1786), a Scottish-born merchant. His farm began a few feet south of today’s 33rd Street and reached to between 38th and 39th Streets. His house stood on a since-levelled hill at Park Avenue and 36th Street, called Inclenberg, or ‘fire beacon hill’ in Dutch.
