46 St–Bliss St

Sunnyside, Queens

Bliss Street, now 46th Street, was named after ferry operator and industrialist Neziah Bliss.

Bliss owned most of the land of nearby Blissville, also named after him, in the 1830s and 1840s, and built the first Blissville Bridge, a drawbridge over Newtown Creek to Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In 1835 he and Eliphalet Nott bought the Hunter family estate at Hunters Point. The street was given its number in the 1930s; since 2003 it officially bears both names.
