Named after West 49th Street, where it meets Seventh Avenue in Midtown.
The station lies at West 49th Street and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Like most of Manhattan's numbered streets, 49th Street goes back to the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, which mapped out 155 crosstown streets.
