Named after 57th Street and Seventh Avenue, the corner of Carnegie Hall.
The Commissioners' Plan of 1811 made 57th Street one of fifteen crosstown streets 100 feet wide, when most others were 60 feet. After Carnegie Hall opened beside the station in 1891, an artistic hub grew up around two blocks of West 57th Street. Seventh Avenue, also laid out in 1811, is known in part as Fashion Avenue for its role in the garment and fashion industry.
