Named after 53rd Street in Sunset Park.
53rd Street is part of Brooklyn’s main grid and runs from First Avenue to Dahill Road. The neighbourhood around it had no name of its own until the 20th century: it was lumped together with southern Brooklyn areas such as Bay Ridge. After local industry declined in the 1940s and 1950s, the name Sunset Park was given to the region north of 65th Street as part of an urban renewal initiative.
