One of the wide crosstown streets of the 1811 Manhattan grid.
72nd Street was one of 15 east–west streets that the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which laid out Manhattan’s grid, made 100 feet wide; most other streets were 60 feet. It is also one of the few streets that runs through Central Park, by way of Women’s Gate, Terrace Drive and Inventors’ Gate.
