Named after 86th Street, where Bay Ridge meets Fort Hamilton.
86th Street belongs to Brooklyn’s grid of numbered streets and runs from Shore Road to McDonald Avenue. The area south of it is sometimes considered part of Fort Hamilton, a former village named for the military post at its centre. The fort, begun in 1825 and completed in 1831, is named for Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury.
