Named after the Arthur Kill, the strait between Staten Island and New Jersey.
The station, opened in 2017 on Arthur Kill Road, replaced the Atlantic and Nassau stations. ‘Arthur Kill’ is an anglicisation of the Dutch achter kill, ‘back channel’, which would refer to its position ‘behind’ Staten Island; the name goes back to the Dutch colonial era in the early 17th century. ‘Kill’ comes from Middle Dutch kille, a riverbed, channel or stream.
