Richmond Valley

Staten Island

A name given by the railway, which turned part of Tottenville into its own neighbourhood.

The area was considered part of Tottenville until the station opened in 1860; it became a neighbourhood of its own once the Staten Island Railway named it Richmond Valley. ‘Richmond’ is also the old name of Staten Island’s county: in 1683 the island became Richmond County, named after Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, an illegitimate son of King Charles II.
