The old road to Astoria, a village named after John Jacob Astor.
Astoria Boulevard follows a road authorised in 1835 from Flushing Bay to Hallett’s Cove, the settlement that became Astoria; long known as Flushing Avenue, it was renamed in the 1920s. The village took its name from the fur tycoon John Jacob Astor: Stephen Halsey hoped he would give $2,000 for a school for girls. Astor gave only $500, but the name stayed. The station was first called Hoyt Avenue.
