Named after Avenue I, one of Brooklyn’s lettered avenues.
Forgotten New York traces the lettered avenues to a street plan devised in 1874 by the Town Survey Commissioners of Kings County for the Town of Flatbush, with lettered avenues running east–west and numbered streets north–south. Avenue I runs from Dahill Road to Flatlands Avenue. Not every letter survived: Avenue E’s roadbed is now part of Ditmas Avenue, and Avenue G became Glenwood Road.
