One of Brooklyn's lettered avenues, which run all the way from A to Z.
Brooklyn's lettered avenues go back to a street-naming system devised in 1874 by the Town Survey Commissioners of Kings County for the Town of Flatbush: east–west lettered avenues and north–south numbered streets. Some letters were later swapped for names, such as Avenue Q, which according to Forgotten New York became Quentin Road in 1922. Avenue U begins at Stillwell Avenue in Gravesend and ends at Bergen Avenue in Bergen Beach.
