Bay Ridge Avenue, the grid’s 69th Street, carries the neighbourhood’s name.
The area was once the village of Yellow Hook, named for the colour of its soil, with ‘hook’ from the Dutch hoek, ‘corner’. In 1853 it was renamed to avoid any association with yellow fever. The new name, Bay Ridge, was chosen for the local geography.
