Beach 90 St

Rockaway Beach, Queens

Signed ‘Holland’, after Michael P. Holland, an early developer of the area.

In 1857 Holland bought land on the Rockaway Peninsula and named the area after himself; in 1897 the hamlet of Holland merged with neighbouring Hammels. The Long Island Rail Road built a station here in 1880 for the nearby Holland Hotel. Holland Avenue also bears his name: it does not refer to New York’s Dutch past.
