Beach 98 St

Rockaway Beach, Queens

Signed ‘Playland’, after the amusement park that stood beside it.

The Long Island Rail Road opened the stop in 1903 as Steeplechase. In 1900 George Tilyou, owner of Steeplechase Park at Coney Island, had bought land here and called the plot ‘Steeplechase Park’; an amusement park was soon built on it. In 1928 A. Joseph Geist bought the park, which became known as Rockaways’ Playland; the station was renamed Playland in 1933. The park’s last season was 1985.
