Named after the Bergen family, one of Brooklyn’s most important early families.
Their patriarch, Hans Hansen Bergen, was raised in Bergen, Norway, before moving to New Amsterdam in 1633, according to Brownstoner. His descendants, the Dutch Bergen clan, became big landowners in Kings County, and they inspired the street’s name.
