Carroll St

Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Named after Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Charles Carroll (1737–1832) represented Maryland in the Continental Congress in 1776, the year Maryland troops, remembered as the Maryland 400, charged the British during the Battle of Brooklyn, with heavy losses. Carroll Park, bought by the city in 1853, was named after him in honour of the Maryland regiment, and the neighbourhood gradually took the name Carroll Gardens in the 1960s.
