Broad Street was once the Heere Gracht, a canal in New Amsterdam.
The Dutch name means ‘canal of the lords’. The canal drew its water from the East River and was filled in in 1676, after fruit and vegetable vendors had made it difficult for boats to enter. The station lies under Broad and Nassau Streets at Wall Street, but was named after Broad Street to distinguish it from two other nearby Wall Street stations.
