Named after the Elting family, who settled here in the 19th century.
The area was first called South Side, and later Seaside. It owes its present name to a prominent local farming family named Elting, also spelled Eltinge. The station opened in April 1860 as the southern end of the Staten Island Railway, which was extended to Tottenville later that year.
