Named after Grand Street, once the first main commercial street of Williamsburg.
It divided the town into a Northside and a Southside, and street numbering began from it: North 1st Street on one side, South 1st Street on the other. Its first stretches from the East River were called Washington Street and then Dunham Street. The Grand Street Ferry once linked it with Grand Street in Manhattan.
