Named after Hunts Point, the peninsula named for Thomas Hunt Jr.
English settlers Edward Jessup and John Richardson arrived in 1663 and bought the peninsula from the Wecquaesgeek. After Jessup died, his widow Elizabeth entrusted the land to her son-in-law Thomas Hunt Jr., for whom the area is named; NYC Parks calls Thomas Hunt one of the first settlers there, in the 1670s. Hunts Point Avenue is the peninsula’s main street.
