Named after Longwood, a neighbourhood that grew out of a 19th-century estate called Longwood Park.
An 1858 map shows ‘Longwood Park’ as the estate of Charles Denison, who bought most of its land in 1841. After his death in 1863, his executors sold it, mansion included, to Samuel B. White in 1864. According to Forgotten New York the neighbourhood sprang from Longwood Park, and in the late 19th century the area was subdivided into residential lots.
