Named after Kingston, the first of a row of avenues honouring New York State cities.
Kingston, Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Utica, Rochester and Buffalo: seven Crown Heights avenues bear the names of New York State cities. NY1 reports they were named in 1835 as a tribute to the Erie Canal. A Brooklyn Public Library librarian notes that, from Kingston to Buffalo, they trace the route a boat would take north on the Hudson and on to the Mohawk River.
