Gravesend Neck Road, a colonial road leading to a ‘neck’, probably of dry land.
The station was formerly Gravesend Neck Road, after one of the two main roads of the old town of Gravesend, which ran east to west. Dating from the colonial era, it was likely built over an Indian trail. The ‘neck’ it led to lay in what is now northern Sheepshead Bay: probably a narrow strip of dry land amid marshier ground.
