Since 2020 the name also honours Medgar Evers and the college named after him.
President Street station took its double name on 1 October 2020, for the nearby college and to honour its namesake. Medgar Evers (1925–1963), a Second World War army veteran, was the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi and fought segregation there until he was murdered at his home in Jackson. The college was established in 1970.
