Franklin Avenue, joined in 2020 by the college named after Medgar Evers.
A 2019 state law added the college’s name, official from 1 October 2020, to reflect its nearness and to honour civil rights figure Medgar Evers, assassinated in Mississippi on 12 June 1963. Activists had fought for years for a senior college in central Brooklyn; the city’s Board of Higher Education approved the name Medgar Evers College in 1970.
