The name of the Van Siclen family, Dutch settlers of western Long Island.
The Van Siclens arrived from the Netherlands and settled in western Long Island in the mid-17th century. They spelt their name in two ways, as was common in colonial times before spellings were fixed, which is why maps show both Van Siclen Avenue and Van Sicklen Street. Forgotten New York counts three streets, four subway or elevated stations and a cemetery with the family name.
