Named after the old village of West Farms and East Tremont Avenue.
The ‘West Farms’, the farthest western section of the town of Westchester, were granted in 1666 to Edward Jessup and John Richardson; Forgotten New York says the name came from being the westernmost part of a district called Ten Farms. ‘Tremont’ was coined by a 19th-century postmaster, by tradition from three (‘tre’) hills: Mount Eden, Mount Hope and Fairmount. The station was formerly 177th Street.
