Named after 174th Street, one of the Bronx's numbered cross streets.
Much of the West Bronx's street numbering carries over from upper Manhattan without matching it exactly. It goes back to the annexation of this part of Westchester County, west of the Bronx River, to New York City, which took effect in 1874; the areas east of the river followed in 1895. ‘East’ marks a street lying east of Jerome Avenue.
