Named after the place and rue Cambronne, which honour General Pierre Cambronne (1770–1842).
At Waterloo he commanded the Guard's last square and was captured, wounded. Legend has him answer a call to surrender with 'The Guard dies but does not surrender!', then with the 'mot de Cambronne', merde – which he always denied. The rue de l'École and the place de l'École-Militaire took his name by decree of 24 August 1864.
