Named after the place Charles-de-Gaulle, long called the place de l'Étoile ('star').
Twelve avenues meet at the square, which from the air looks like a star. The name of Charles de Gaulle (1890–1970), leader of the Free French and president of the Republic, was added in 1970 after his death on 9 November.
